A Guide to Places of Remembrance
Brzeszcze District Under German Occupation 1939-1945
Jacek Lachendro

The Nazi occupant’s brutal policies had a traumatic effect on the lives of the local inhabitants. Some of them were evicted, sent away to do forced labour or incarcerated. The rest lived next to the largest German concentration camp, Auschwitz, and its sub-camps, Budy and Jawischowitz. Despite repressions imposed by the occupant, over 300 of the gmina’s inhabitants risked their lives to help concentration camp inmates.

The intention of this book is to commemorate these people as well as those, both anonymous and known, who endured suffering and died at the hands of the Nazis in Brzeszcze and surrounding areas in the years 1939-1945.
